The Archetype Approach of Carl Jung Reflected on DR. Jekyll Multiple-Personalities in the Novel Entittled The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of Choosing the Study
Human as individual creature have their own uniqueness and characteristic. Human generally has the same needs such as breath, food, properly life and another human to comminucate or socialization. Every human also definetely has personality. Whether biological personality, inherited from their parent’s personality, personality that is affected by the environment such as in school, neightbour hood, work places or personality that affected by the environment which appears disease cause tramatical experience that called personality disorder.
Personality is reflection of human behaviour that describing their character in society. Personality also define as a potrait of human behaviour, attitude, mind, feeling, opinion, character and etc that influence them to did somehing right or wrong based on their environment.
Your personality style is your organizing principle. It propels you on your life path. It represents the orderly arrangement of all your attributes, thoughts, feelings, attitudes, behaviours, and coping mechanisms. It is the distinctive pattern of psychological functioning-the way you think, feel and behave-that makes you definetely you. (Oldham, John, 1995)
From statement above personality is original principle which represent who defenitely a person is by their own style of, attitude, thought, mid, behaviour, atribute and etc.
Personality also could affected by the environment such as neightboorhood, childhood, in school, work place or etc. The environment that affected the personality sometimes will cause the personality disorder. Personality disorder are mental health conditions that affect how people manage their feelings and how they are relates to other people. There are many kinds of personality disorder, one of that is Dissociative Personality Disorder (DID) or known as Multiple Personality Disorder.
DID or Multiple Personality Disorder remains a poorly understood phenomenon. Dissociative Identity Disorder is a splitting of the core pesonality into distinct identities as a creative, useful way of coping wuth severe ongoing traumatic, whetehr physical, emotional, and/or sexual. The defining feature of DID is severe change in identity. Each dentity may be in controlof your behaviour and thoughts at different times. Each has a distinctive pattern of thinking and relating to the world. Dissociation has five different types, such as Amnesia, Depersonalisation, Derealisation, Identity Confusion, Identity Alteration. And this paper will focused in Identity Confusion of DID or Multiple Personality Disorder.
To analyze about what aspect of human personality that reflected on the literary work there are studies and approaches. The study to analyze about human behaviour and personality is Psychology theory.
Archetype is an approach of human personality, it is branch of psychology study. It begins with Carl Jung. Jung derive human as a biological creature who their soul closely related to the primordial patterns. Human do have the aspect of personal conscious and collective unconscious. In jungian psyhology, collective unconscious could consist of the basic psyche components by Jung as Archetype. Archetype is universal concept which contains of human ancestor experience. (Feist-Feist, 2009 p. 116)
This archetype concept is very important to understand about the symbol of dream because he explained why there is a dream which has universal-meaning, and everyone could apply that symbol. But also there is privately dream which merely applies by person who dreams itself.
Dreams are the main source of archetype material, and certain dreams offer what Jung considered proof for the existence of the archetype. These dreams produce motifs that could not have been known to the dreamer through personal experience. The motif often coincide with those known to ancient people or to natives of contemporary aboriginal tribes. (Feist-Feist, 2009 p. 117)
The statement aimed that dreams as the primary aspect of archetype. The personal experience could not influence the motifs of dream. But who known archaic could influence those motifs. Because human have a same ancestor and descended race from one parent thus human relatively has same historical.
The most notable of archetype conceptual are persona, shadow, anima, animus, great mother, wise old man, hero and self.
This study would analyze several concept of Carl Jung Archetype on Robert Louis Stevenson novel entittled The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. According to his literary workthe main character of this novel has multiple-personalities. Those personalities quite different each others, are his own personality another as a quite bad personality. It called Dissociative Personality Disorder which cause of childhood traumatic. Robert stevenson describe the main character as a person who realized of his second personality when he was in chilhood, he live as usual but suddenly he could not hold on his fury about nothing. In his fury he did bad behaviour such as killed, but he tried to hidden his second personality from people around by drink a poison to transform his own self being another. The main character of this novel named Jekyll is reflected as persona in Carl Jung Archetype conceptual, and Jekyll’s second personality naemd Hyde asa the shadow who reflected inCarl Jung Archetype conceptual.
B. Research Problem
The research problems that this study to find out the answer of the following question:
1. What kind of factors influences the personality of Dr. Jekyll?
2. What kind of the archetype described in Dr. Jekyll characters?
C. Objective
The objectives of the study are:
1. The Traumatic childhood which causes Multiple Personality Disorder in Dr. Jekyll character.
2. To know the kinds of the archetype on Dr. Jekyll characters
D. Limitation of the Study
Based on the problem above, this study limits the problem by analyzing the main characters, in relation to the Archetype conceptual and Multiple-Personalities of main characters in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Novel.
E. Significance of the Study
This study is expected to give a picture that happened in literary fields as reference to the other in analyzing novel that has related to Archetype of Multiple-Personalities that reflected in main characters The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde novel for the students of College of Language in Sultan Agung Islamic University especially for English Literature Program. This study is expected to give the benefit to the readers for more understand about Archetype and Multiple-Personalities of main characters in Robert Louis Stevenson entittled The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
F. Outline of the Study
This writting is about chapter one that contains of introduction which is divide into six parts, they are Background of Choosing the Study, Problem Formulation, Objective of the Study, Limitations of the Study, Significance of the Study, and Outline of the Study.
